4 Things Currently Rocking My World

Comments 69

A quick recipe, a rant from a girl who can kick your ass, and a new workout to try

The "rocking my world" entry has become somewhat of a theme here on my blog. It's where I get to talk about random things that may not constitute a full blog post by themselves, but with their powers combined (like Captain Planet) make for a fun article.

The Ultimate Burger

On a week when I'm feeling extra productive I'll make a batch of these and put 'em in the fridge to eat later. Half the time I don't even re-heat them. Delicious. This recipe makes five to six burgers depending on how big you make them.

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef
1 egg
1 small bunch Italian parsley
12 crackers (like Ritz or something comparable)
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper

How to prepare and cook:

1. Put your crackers in a bowl and crush the shit out of them. (That's a cooking term.)
2. Chop your parsley
3. In a large mixing bowl add the parsley, mustard, beef, egg, and season with salt and pepper.
4. Using both your hands mix the shit out of it. (Another cooking term.)
5. Roll and pat into small patties,  put on a plate,  and drizzle olive oil on each side.
6. Place in the fridge for 5-10 minutes to "firm up."
7. Get a pan and put it on medium-high heat. It should be hot to the touch.
8. Cook for four minutes per side.
9. Eat, rub belly, and declare that life is good.

Girls Who Can Kick My Ass

Pip is a former client of mine, a professional skier, writer, and all-around badass. I asked her to write me a few paragraphs about how she feels when she goes to the gym. Two words: watch out.

I’m not that big. In fact, I’m what you could call pretty little. I’m 5’2”, 125 pounds. But despite my small size, I can still kick your ass. I like to do it quietly and unassuming. Walk into the gym, stretch, warm up, watch the meatheads in their strategically cut t-shirts , lats on full display, laying on the bench grunting their way through a one rep set of bench presses. One? Really dude, you can only do one? Huh.

I prefer power lifting or Olympic. Occasionally you’ll find busting through a heavy set of 3x5 or looking for my 1 rep max, but never laying down on a bench, spending more time checking out the chicks on the elipticals than working up a sweat.

After all, that’s why I’m here: to sweat. I start my workout slowly, picking out the weight, going over the different moves in the superset, making sure I have the back extension machine under lock down and plenty of space. Then it starts. You don’t want me to drop the bar?  Tough.  I’m not setting this bar down gently after a round of jerks.  And I’m not stopping after that round either. Catch my breath? That would be cheating. This work out is all about me and the clock. How fast can I finish?

Next, wall balls, then 28” box jumps, then onto rowing, repeat.  Five rounds later I’m finished, laying on the floor, chest heaving, and relieved that I’m finished. But my workout has earned more than one weary look.

“Those are the best cleans I’ve ever seen, and you’re a girl! What are you training for?”

Training for? Nothing in particular. Just life.

When you have a second, check out her blog, The Adventures of Pip.

Hardcore Density Training for Fat-Loss and General Pain

The past few months I've been experimenting with an alternative type of cardio to stay lean and improve my work capacity: bodyweight (or light weight) circuits for time. I do them once or twice per week, which serves as good active recovery from my weight training sessions.

Here's something to try the next time you go to the gym. (Warning: it sucks real bad.)

A1 Blast Strap, TRX, or Bodyweight Row x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds
A2 Jumping Lunge x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds

Repeat 2-3 more times

B1 Push-up variation (regular, spiderman, dive-bomber, etc.) x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds
B2 Kettlebell swing x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds

Repeat 2-3 more times

C1 Overhead Medicine Ball Slams x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds
C2 Close-grip Chin-up x 30 seconds
Rest 30 seconds

Repeat 2-3 more times

Playing Outside

Here's something to try: turn off your cell phone, pack some food, get a few friends together, and go do something outside. Brilliant!

I'm amazed at how many people never leave their homes or daily routine. Fresh air, good company, and a new physical challenge = memories and a general feeling of awesomeness.

+++++

So what kinds of things are rocking your world right now? Let me know below in the comments! One random person will be picked to receive a free Humblecock shirt!

(EDIT: Thanks to everyone for their comments! I picked Tony Roe and Ciaran to win the free shirt. Check your email, guys.)

Great blog! First time poster, long time reader. Totally irrelevant comment: I've been dreaming of a Tony Horton (P90X) / Nate Green workout video. Can you imagine the intensity? Epic.

Getting outside is a blast! Was out sailing this past weekend and had one of the best summer days ever!

The gym has its place, the track, heck even the pool... Nothing beats getting outdoors and actually playing with the amazing body you were given and are (hopefully) building!

What's rocking my world? Realizing that mental fitness financial fitness, and physical fitness all tie into together. By being physically fit thru not only a regime and basic like walking hiking and bike riding my mental fitness increases simply by feeling better and also doing at a crossword or sum sort mental game. And by having the discipline to keep to those two things, I have the discipline to make sure my money situations are under control.

What's rocking my world? Discipline and fun.

I love those kind of cardio workouts. When I try yours I'll look over at the sheeple on the cardio equipment and laugh.

I wonder how many of our current ailments today are due to a simple lack of fresh air. You live in a beautiful part of the country.

Great post, Nate.

I'd really like to see more strong, motivated women at my gym.

Anyway, 4 things currently rocking MY world...

1.) Life - first and foremost. Living life and enjoying it as much as possible everyday. There is always something about life you can be joyous about.

2.) My girlfriend - enough said, right?

3.) Foam Rolling/Mobility - This has really been helping me out. I feel more flexible on a daily basis, and I feel more capable when I hit the gym.

4.) Maker's Mark - The occasional "clean" glass of Maker's really does the trick for me - I'm sure you'll agree with that. ;)

Soon-to-be rocking my world - density workouts. Keep up the goodness, Nate.

-Tony

GravatarSean Fox12:48PM on July 22, 2010

1. The Fighters Mind by Sam Sheridan
2. EDT workouts
3. Trail Runs
4. HIll Srpints

GravatarTy01:04PM on July 22, 2010

1. Segrams 7 on the rocks after a long day at work
2. Hitting a new PR of 405 for 10 for deadlift at the lightest BW I've been in a year (183) and bleeding all over the barbell /ground due to ripped shins/callouses and seeing the guy that was doing curls in the squat rack next to me attempt to lift it off the ground when I went to get towels to wipe the blood up and him not realizing there was blood, getting blood on him, then throwing up. Needless to say I didn't have to clean up the blood, the puke, or rack my weights, he did.
3. My dutch oven, it's a miracle for chili and other meals and making large quantities of food easily.
4. Braising. It makes steak round and pork and other thick cuts of meat sooo much juicier.
5. Started my own training/nutrition consultation company in April, and am now moving out of my parents house tomorrow, thank God.
6. My gal is moving here soon, she is an amazing cook and a nutritionist. Can you say bulking cleanly?
7. Tour de france. Lance is awesome. Actually anyone over 35 in the tour de france is awesome (and there are a few).

Gravatarsarah01:35PM on July 22, 2010

what's rocking my world?

-kayaking! i bought one about a month ago and i love going paddling w/ my friends!

-the chill pandora station i am grooming to play while i massage

GravatarLarry Hou01:39PM on July 22, 2010

Well, I haven't been able to hit the gym in a while...so I guess I'd have to say my longboard. I take it everywhere, especially when I go out to meet with friends, it gets me some odd looks but I guess that just means it's interesting to them.

GravatarKonstantin02:09PM on July 22, 2010

1) First aid.

Seriously. Last summer, I got involved with St. John Ambulance. Within the year, I've put in so much work that they've promoted me and decided to pay for my advanced training and instructor courses. I'm having an absolute blast teaching (it's pretty much the greatest part-time job ever, other than maybe being a classy stripper) and I've met hundreds of amazing people - plus I've been all over the city, getting lots of fresh air, helping those in need, and getting free food for providing first aid at community events (for a college student, free food is better than any award). Everything from sheepdog trials to dragon boat racing to charity walks to hockey games - it sounds cheesy, but giving back to the community opens up a whole new world.

2) Being in shape. As a former fat kid, few feelings can compare to taking your shirt off at the beach with pride rather than fear and shame. Ah, the little joys in life :)

3) Oh, and coffee. Yeah, it's not a good thing, but there's nothing quite like that first cup that lights that special fire that says "How shall I change the world today?" No delusions of grandeur, mind you - I know I'm just chipping away, but I'm loving every moment of it.

Gravatarjimmy02:27PM on July 22, 2010

Another recipe stolen from Jamie Oliver I see :D My mum met him a few years ago apparently he's really tall. I have a few of Jamie Oliver's books and I brought Jamie's Food Revolution after your last post with the Chilli Con Carne. I had to import it because I live in the UK but it's certainly worth it. Iv tried these already and they are awesome! Its a brilliant book and I use it all the time to. A few of the recipes from Jamie's books a a staple in my new diet.

I just started your Build For Show program. I'm on week 5 of the autumn program and I'm starting to feel a look a little stronger. I can't wait to get for the winter program to come round.

I think I read somewhere your writing a new book. Is this true?

Riding my motorcycle wherever I go, even to the gym. I love summers, I hardly ever use the car.

Vintage Motorcycle Days Mid Ohio. 3 days in July of non-stop fun, just looking at over 30,000 bikes that come to this even. Meet old friends, make new ones. I've been going there ever year since 2003. I don't miss this.

Looking forward to riding the Blue Ridge Parkway at the end of this month. All of it. 400 miles one way. I hope to do the Skyline Drive while I'm at it.

I love riding, can't ya tell ?!

If you don't have a bike, what are you waiting for?

I'll have to try that hamburger recipe to make it the 4th thing that will rock my world.

Totally agree on getting outdoors.

Just last weekend I and a bunch of friends went out for some river rafting in Bakersfield, CA. The rapids weren't that strong so we had a chance to ditch the raft and just swim our way down the river. I tell ya, there's nothing better than swimming down a river in a 100-degree day. Oh and the paddling was an awesome workout.

GravatarChris Stella01:19PM on July 27, 2010

4) Working on theatre and film projects... happy to be doing what I love.

GravatarNiall03:43AM on August 03, 2010

Great blog..

Thing's rocking my world:

Family and friends. Been through a tough time when I found out my girlfriend of 1.5 years had been cheating on me. Turns out it was with 7 different guys. Having people to talk to really helped.

The gym. What better way to let out my anger than on weights?

Precision Nutrition (Scrawny to Brawny challenge). I'm 2 months in and i'm eating better and feeling (physically) better than I ever have. The strength and extra muscle don't hurt either.

Fashion. Nothing like a bit of retail therapy when you're feeling down. Really liking fresh new tshirts and cool shoes.

Travel. Currently planning a trip to Europe. Can't wait.

GravatarJarrod08:06AM on August 03, 2010

A bunch of my shipmates were talking about these on base today and I had to share, they're braclets and arm bands made from old military uniforms. The awesome part is 70% of the profits go back to helping those of us on active duty in all branches and helping us stay intouch with our familys while overseas. Check them out at "www.bandsforarms.com", I already ordered some and am looking at sending in some of my wornout unifroms for the personalized bands for my family. Thats whats currently rocking my world.

GravatarSean Fox09:05AM on August 03, 2010

Hey Nate- Great post. Things rocking my world right now?

1) Sleigh bells- indie band with a phenomenal sound
2) Ice packs - I recently bought two so that I can help heal my recently sprained ankle (playing basketball). They are so much better than traditional ice because they can actually wrap around your joint.
2a) The Smirnoff Icing game. It actually sucks, but its so popular now I thought it was worth mentioning.
3) DIY BBQing. I'm not grilling things that come in boxes anymore.
4) Dexter - I'm on season 3, its great.

Nate,

Good stuff.

Here's what's rocking my world right now:

1. Being able to get back under the Oly bar.

Unfortunately, I'm boring. So that's about it.

On a workout note, have you thought of doing something a little more on the pain tolerance/fat loss end with your kettlebells other than just supersetting Swings with Push Ups?

How about some good ol' fashioned high rep Clean and Jerks or Clean and Presses if you like in a density format? Twenty minutes of sets of 10 C+Js will cook your goose and melt some butter from your belly for sure.

Keep up your good work both here and on T-Nation.
