Pills and puzzles...
(Thanks to TheGiantVermin for the photo.)
I spent all of yesterday and most of today puking up saltine crackers and Gatorade in between crying for my mommy and cursing my existence, which should be an automatic indicator that I haven't got any "real" work done in the past 48 hours.
I have, however, gotten my fair share of "fake" work accomplished (namely watching movies, surfing the 'net, and reading) and thought I'd share a few cool things I stumbled upon.
Enjoy!
Let the Right One In
Let me be clear: I friggin' hate scary movies. I never watch them and always go out of my way to avoid the trailers, too. If I'm at home, I'll close my eyes or quickly turn the channel. If I'm at the movies and suffering through the previews, I'll usually bow my head and cough for a few minutes. (This makes me very popular with the rest of the movie crowd, as you can imagine.)
Simply, I'm a giant pussy.
So when my editor TC told me to rent Let the Right One In, a Swedish movie about a 12-year old boy who falls in love with a vampire, I had my reservations. In fact, the movie sat in the Netflix envelope for a full two weeks before I opened it and popped it in yesterday.
Boy, am I glad I watched it. Sure, it was a little disturbing, but mostly it was beautiful. The plot was fantastic and the acting was superb. (The child actors weren't even allowed to read the script. The director just fed them lines right before they filmed each scene.) Check out the trailer and then do yourself a favor and rent it.
Esquire magazine
One good thing about sick days: you read a ton. I finally finished up a book I'd been working on for a few weeks (The Ice Beneath You) and started in on my collection of Esquire magazines.
This is one hell of a magazine with a great staff of writers. In fact, I'd say it's the best print magazine on the market (other than Playboy, obviously.)
Just check out this article by AJ Jacobs and tell me you don't want to read more.
The articles are always well-written, funny, and thought provoking. (And if you don't want to read the articles, there's always nice pictures of cute girls to look at.)
I read articles about monkeys, Ben Affleck, the decline of the modern man, horse racing, Tiger Woods, and the best ways to break the law. Not too shabby.

I'm off to the bathroom to vomit yet again. Got any other magazines, movies, books, websites, or cool things to do while sick? Let me know!

Come waste time, I know you're a member, haha.
Get to feelin' well soon, bud.
I just watched that trailer...and almost soiled myself.
Seems scary - in an intelligent way.
Finally. I was growing weary of being surrounded by entertainment that caters to the common doofus.
Thanks for the tip.
I wonder if the plural if doofus is "doofi".
Re: your sickness. Be of good cheer, this too shall pass - death comes to us all.
Hey man,
Ya no fun being sick. I got a cold and am complaining about 100x more than my sis whose got the flu, but hey. I took a little lesson out of Tim Ferris' book and tried some of his western medicine cures and they work. I rounded up the link for ya,

www.ninjavideo.net Watch Eastbound and Down, it's great.
The movie looks like a more hardcore, manly, backwards version of Twilight....I like it! if i was sick i would probably play Wii, wish i had some better ideas for you nate, but honestly i can't remember the last time i was even a little under the weather. lucky i guess, feel better!
Awesome article you linked there, Nate. It's got some scary truth's in it.
I'll have to check that movie out. If TC recommends it has to pretty decent. Esquire is a great magazing. I've been subscribing to it for the last couple of years. Lots of great info and pics....love the pics.
Looks like you had some productive down time, buddy - I'll have to see that vampire movie!
I realise that I am supposed to add something intelligent to the conversation, but I'm knee deep in study and a little sick of serious reading for today. If you get sick of the serious as well and want a brief return to childhood (in line with the pleas for mommy), try the link below. It's a drum set. It's great. (I have children, I did not find this using my own motivation, honestly!)

Another magazine I really like is GOOD. It's the magazine for people that give a damn. They have some really good thought provoking articles. That tackle a lot of different issues. I just stumbled upon it about 6 months ago.
Wow, I hate scary stuff like that, but that movie looks REALLY GOOD! I'll check it out! How does TC find this shit? hahaha, he's an odd bird, so it doesn't surprise me one bit he came across it!
Now I gotta find that damn nightlight! :P
Man! I've ACTUALLY been wanting to get sick just so I could catch up on some books & various reading off the net. BUT IT NEVER HAPPENS! I just can't get sick! When I do feel run down I tell my myself, self, YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO GET SICK! So I never do!
