The Jason Lengstorf Experiment

Comments 12

He looks happy, doesn't he?

He looks happy, doesn't he?

You probably know him as my good friend and the web-geek who built this site.

I've been friends with Jason for well over a decade and he's always been kinda chunky. (Friends are allowed to call each other fat motherfuckers or arrogant pricks, by the way. We do that a lot. Like so many other things we do, it's wonderful for our self esteem.)

In December of 2007 (pictured above), though, Jason was just plain fat.

So he decided to do something about it.

He didn't get too fancy. Jason opted to work out a few days per week and monitor his eating habits. And it worked. Kind of.

These were taken on September 6th, 2008:

Jason on October 6th

Definitely not bad, but also no where near his potential.

So, again, he decided to something about it. And he starts today.

This is the first time I've "really" coached Jason. Sure, I've made him nearly pass out on the treadmill or given him random nutritional advice, but this is the first time we're getting down to business.

So we decided to put this up to keep him on track. Not that he'd slack, but having some pictures up on the 'net will definitely speed up the process and hold him accountable.

His goals:

1. Go from 24% body fat to 12%.
2. Build his chest, shoulders and arms
3. Know how to eat well without having to think about it.

Besides having a bad-ass coach on his side, he's got ultimate freedom. Thanks to his work-ethic and near-genius, he's officially quit his day job and gone full freelance as a coder and web designer.

Plus, he'll be training with another good friend, Kyle Hibler. (I'm actually writing an article about Kyle for T-Nation. He's another great success story.)

So that's that.

He's going to bring his A-game and get some shit done. And we'll see if I can help out along the way.

We'll be posting again in about 12 weeks on Monday, December 22nd with updated pictures and a break-down of how he did it. (That is, of course, if he does it.)

After seeing Jason and Kyle's drive, I felt like I had to "tighten up", too. So I'm going to do my own little experiment. But more on that later.

For now, let's give Jason some shit and some encouragement.

And now may be a good time to look at yourself in the mirror, take some photos, and see what the hell you could accomplish in 12 weeks, too.

I didn't nearly pass out. I completely, one-hundred-percent, absolutely PASSED THE FUCK OUT. If I remember correctly, I came to with your fingers in my mouth because I went out so hard you were worried I was going to swallow my tongue.

Oh, the memories...

The body is the product of the mind, and I think that Jason has the necessary mental strength to develop himself physically and meet those goals. It's never the decision that's hard, it's the carrying it out part that gets people.

I'm working on a similar project with my younger brother, and have him on a three month program that he's about halfway done with. When we started, I told him that I wouldn't have my time wasted and asked him how important this was to him.

He replied, "I hate the way I look and am willing to sweat blood."

He's actually been the one pushing me harder in some of our workouts. I've been quite impressed. He started out as a fat bastard, but has already made a lot of progress.

The start point is irrelevant. Weakness or failure isn't to be ashamed of; only the acceptance thereof. A weak body can be rapidly transformed as long as the individual's character can withstand it-that very undertaking is an expression of strength-and everyone in life gets hit and falls. The difference is that few people ever push themselves past their beginning state, and an even smaller number of people can pick themselves back up and keep going when they take a hit. This is why a person's body is one of the most telling representations of the state of their mind.

Character-wise, Jason has the potential to transform himself. With your guidance and the help of his friends, I don't think anything can stop him.

If I would have met Jason in December, I never would have spoke to him. EVER!

Just messin with ya! Great work J Leng!

Nice work so far Jason, looks like you've got a pretty solid plan laid out, can't wait to see your progress.

Ps. will you shave the nipple hair when you reach 12%? ;)

@ Jonathan:
I don't know. I've grown fond of the fur; it keeps me warm, and when I'm bored and lonely, I can braid it. :)

I like your style.

GravatarVlad09:30AM on October 09, 2008

Hey, Nate.

You are doing great work on the articles!

P.S Sign up buttons don't work (for the mail list), neither on the blog or the site for your upcoming book!

GravatarJason Lengstorf12:15PM on October 09, 2008

@Vlad:
The sign-up for the Cheat Sheet should be fixed now on both sites. I grossly underestimated the response Nate would get on this feature, and for that, I apologize.

Everything should be working (I just signed up and it worked, and there have been about twenty new sign-ups today). Please don't hesitate to contact me if it's still acting up.

Say hey Jason,

Just thought I'd put my money where your mouth is. If you can sport at least two abs by the December update, I'll speak with you about designing a site for a project I'm working on.

So, lose some fat around the middle, and you might fatten up the wallet. ;)

Do it to it, man.

(And Nate, keep up the good work, kiddo.)

GravatarJason Lengstorf04:45PM on October 11, 2008

@Chris:
You're on! Though, I must say, it seems a bit risky to bet the future of your web empire on my willpower. :)

However, a week in, I'm carb- and dairy-free, getting used to the taste of cream-free coffee, and feeling pretty good about things. So far so good.

Thats some good damn work there! Oh, and I agree about shaving the nipple hair...and maybe getting rid of that wicked right lateral pelvic translation.

@Sam:

Right lateral pelvic huh?

Oh, you mean my Marilyn Manson posture?

Yeah. I've been doing a lot of mobility and stability work to try to even out my build and correct the damage done by 60+ hours a week in front of a computer.
